Reach for the Gold Scholarship Winners
OPB Announces Winners of their Reach for the Gold Book ScholarshipOctober 30, 2006 - New York, NY...In keeping true to their motto of Serving and Educating Through Our Diversity, the sisters of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated (OPBSI), congratulate Jennifer Gray and Lindsay Carter on being selected as 2006 Reach for the Gold Book Scholarship recipients. The Reach for the Gold Book Scholarships are part of OPBSI's many initiatives for serving and uplifting the community. Each book scholarship is an award of $500 and is applied to the high costs of college textbooks in the first year of college. Annually, scholarship applications are distributed throughout the nation through various high schools and made available on the Internet for high-school senior female students. Submitted applications are then reviewed based on the candidates commitment to scholastic achievement and community service. Jennifer Gray, a first year student at Delaware State University, was awarded the Benevolence Book Scholarship for her outstanding contributions to her community. Jennifer participated in several groups ranging from her Church Youth Ministry, Model UN, to being President of her Youth Ministry. Lindsay Carter, a first year student at University of North Florida, was awarded the Academic Book Scholarship for her commitment to academic excellence. Lindsay was ranked 2 of 370 students in her graduating class as well as taking a leadership role in her local National Honor Society. Both women were selected from over 100 applications from women representing 29 states across the nation for their commitment to academic excellence and passion for improving their communities. "The Reach for the Gold Book Scholarship is a small way to give back to our community. It provides us with the opportunity to celebrate the successes of young women who will lead us in the future. We want to encourage young women to break the educational barriers and excel in all aspects of their life, including higher education and community service. And, this scholarship provides us with this opportunity," comments Nicole Baker, Executive Director of the OPBSI Alumnae Association. If you or anyone you know is interested in applying, please visit Scholarship for more information. The 2007 Reach for the Gold Book Scholarship applications will be available in January 2007.
